In this series of website planning, we will discuss the importance of planning a successful website. If you’ve read the introduction you’ll understand why planning is paramount.

I am a firm believer of goal setting. In general if we focus on a goal it is easier to reap the rewards. Most websites fail. The main reason for that is lack of planning. In order to build a house you need foundations and the exact same principle can be applied for building a website.

The first step is you must do is decide what a successful website will mean to you. What are your goals for creating this website?

Reasons why goals are important?

1) Goals keep our minds focused
2) Goals provide a greater chance of success
3) Goals focus our energy on achieving results
4) Goals make us more productive
5) Goals create satisfaction for a job well done
6) Achieved goals gives us a sense of inner pride

Before you plan anything else, sit down with a pen and paper then decide your targets for your website.

Exercise One:

Below there is some examples of goals that you may have goals may include:

1)To raise funds for a certain charity
2)To increase awareness of a new scheme or event
3)To become an expert in your niche
4)To make enough money selling information products
5)To generate leads for your business and gain new customers
6)To create an online community
7)To help understand people understand the importance of saving money

I strongly urge you to write one goal for your website; especially if you decide to hire a web designer to create your website. A good web designer must have your interests in mind. Otherwise, the designer’s focus maybe to create a lovely website than looks great, but doesn’t bring in any visitors or money.

Don’t overload yourself with too many goals, otherwise you’ll be trying too hard and more likely to fail. Best call of action is to focus at one goal at a time.

However, I’d be very cautious, of just creating a website for the sake of making money. Earning money online is not easy and it is not a quick fix.If you could make £100,000 overnight online, then everyone would be doing it.In order to create a successful website you need to consider the long term.

Exercise Two:

  1. What will motivate you in 12 months time to continue creating content for your website?
  2. Are you passionate about your niche?
  3. Why are you interested in creating a website for this niche?

Write down all the reasons why you want to create this website. The more empowering reasons you have the List your website goals for the next:

  • 6 months
  • 12 months
  • 2 years
  • 5 years

Focus on creating a useful resource for your target audience where people can learn and so they can return. You should focus on the art of building trust with the target audience. The money will come later.

The website user needs must always come first. People are interested in new information that is why the internet such a useful resource. If your content is not what people are looking for, then web users will go elsewhere for their information. Believe me, there are plenty of other sites on Google and across the web for people to search for.

In this post, we have covered a lot on the importance of goal setting. However, this is valuable, make sure that you complete the excercises.

Next post we will cover is the importance of target audience.

    James,

Another great post, I would like to add that goals only become that way if you concentrate on them daily. Everyday you need to have them in front of you. Post them on your mirror, or on a sticky note in your car. Create an audio file and play it on your MP3 or IPod. Constant reinforcement of meeting your goal will help you get there.

Also, don’t be afraid to celebrate your victories when you make progress on your goals. All work and no play make James a sad boy! You make a great point with your long term thinking, most of us don’t do enough of that because we get caught up in the daily existence of everyday life.
