How secure are your computer files?

Do you back up often? Or do you leave all your computer files stored on your hard drive? Recently, my operating system had some bugs and this made me reinstall Windows again. If I did not back up my work on a regular basis I would have easily lost many hours of work.

Why you need to back up your computer files on a regular basis?

  • A computer can be vulnerable to threats
  • It is good practice to have your work backed up
  • You can save a lot of heart ache
  • Great peace of mind
  • You will be prepared for the unexpected

You can never have enough back-ups of work

One thing that I fear is losing work, especially if i have spent weeks even months on a project. There is nothing worse than back tracking.

Methods to back up your files

  1. External Hard Drive
Back up your files on a external hard drive. It is portable, durable plus very inexpensive. Now there is a 1TB (1000GB) hard drive available for less than £100.
  2. USB Memory Stick
All your files can be saved on a size of a keyring. Now you can buy USB memory sticks with a capacity of 8GB.
  3. SD Card
Many modern computers now have SD card slots. Ideal for digital cameras, the SD cards can hold all types of files, plus provides an excellent storage unit when not being used in digital cameras.
  4. DVD/CD
CD’s and DVD’s are a great method of backing up your work. I prefer DVD’s cause you can store more information than a standard CD.

These methods of great, however, they are completely secure from the risk of fire and theft. If your home or office is burnt to the ground you have lost everything. Not to forget theft, currently in the UK we hear that confidential computer files going missing. This is down to stupidity and lack of care.

One of the latest solutions is to rent an online storage plan. Personally I think this is a great idea.  The benefits of an online storage plan is you can save your work on a secure server without the worry if anything happens to your computer. If you home or office are damaged you have your files stored elsewhere.

If you are business owner, it is very important to make sure your files are safe. If the worst happens you are prepared for it. Believe me I’ve lost work and files before and it is heart breaking. Prevention is always better than cure.
